How do first-time drug users apply detoxification?

- Voluntary drug addiction treatment (at home or at a drug addiction treatment center).

- Compulsory drug addiction treatment.

In Article 96 of the Law on Handling of Administrative Violations 2012, as amended in 2020, drug addicts aged full 18 years or older are subject to the measure of sending to a compulsory detoxification establishment according to the provisions of the Law on Prevention and Control against drugs. Accordingly:  

- Subjects aged 18 years or older: Being sent to compulsory a drug addiction treatment center when falling into one of the following cases:

+ Failing to register, fail to perform or voluntarily terminate voluntary drug detoxification;

+ During the period of voluntary drug detoxification, he was found to have illegally used narcotics;

+ Persons addicted to opiate substances who do not register, do not perform or voluntarily terminate treatment for addiction to opiates with substitute drugs or have been terminated from treatment for addiction to opiates with substitute drugs due to violation of regulations on addiction treatment;

+ During the period of management after drug addiction but having a relapse.

- For people from full 12 to under 18 years old: They will be sent to compulsory detoxification establishments if they fall into one of the following cases:

+ Failing to register, fail to perform or voluntarily terminate voluntary drug detoxification;

+ Being found to illegally use narcotics during voluntary detoxification;

+ Persons addicted to opiate substances who do not register, do not perform or voluntarily terminate treatment for addiction to opiates with substitute drugs or have been terminated from treatment for addiction to opiates with substitute drugs. due to violation of regulations on addiction treatment.

According to the above regulations, if a first-time drug user is discovered, he will have to apply voluntary detoxification at home or in a drug addiction treatment center.

If they fail to register, do not perform or voluntarily terminate voluntary drug detoxification or fall into one of the above cases, they will be sent to compulsory detoxification establishments according to the order and procedures as prescribed by law.
